This Emergent Writing Assessment App (EWAa) provides a fun and easy way to assess children’s emergent writing. Children's knowledge about writing emerges in different ways through a range of experiences with different writing materials, tools, and surrounding print. Each child travels along their own unique journey as they experiment and learn what writing is and how to form letter shapes, write words, and compose messages. Keeping a record of a child’s writing overtime allows teachers and parents to observe the emergence of children’s writing capabilities and support them as they progress through different zones of writing development. A writing assessment criteria guide is provided. Supporting and scaffolding their emergent writing journey will give children an important foundation for their future reading, writing, and spelling at school.
